painting with light

Last night, I had about 30 minutes to get out the door, drive down to TF Green, and beat the sunset once I got the call from Chris Porter at Horizon Aviation. Their new plane that was going to go flying was suddenly grounded due to impending thunder storms. Thus I could practice a little painting with light.
This is not a commercial shoot - this is a practice shoot just to get back in the swing of things with light painting. I only had time for a few shots and very low power flash in my bag, so it isn't what I would pre-visualize, but it is alright for what it is. A photo of a Super-D on a damn hot summer night.
A composite of 2 images (to get landing lights and interior cabin). I used a polarizing filter and a Cokin ND filter to knock down the ambient light 6 stops or so. This is in addition to stopping down the aperture. Then, ran around firing a small flash light select areas of the plane. The exposure was about 5 seconds so I didn't have a lot of time to run, and the flash wasn't quite strong enough. Next time, I'll bring more light with me. I just wanted to see what I could get done on the spur of a moment. Could I have made it a longer exposure? Sure, but it would be to the further detriment of the image quality and the flash just wouldn't have enough juice to get through all that stopping down.
